• Fenit Pier is a quayside development underway in Fenit Harbour, Tralee, Co Kerry. It is a hall and administration building intended to accommodate final assembly of components prior to loading onboard cargo ships. The welding of lengthy crane components and completion of cabling will be enhanced by provision of improved storage and work space in a controlled environment. The project seeks to put order on a harbour quay, which was otherwise dispersed, irregular and generally compromising operations.

The project addresses the separation between private pier operations with restricted access and a viewing platform open to the public. The building reinforces the boundary definition previously performed by a railing.

The site conditions constitute a harsh maritime environment. The building will be exposed to Atlantic gales and corrosive sea water. The design specifically addresses these adverse challenges by sheltering behind an existing rock outcrop and by selective use of particular materials. The vulnerable steel faced cladding has been omitted in lieu of non-corroding polycarbonate and a robust insulated concrete wall panel system. Aluminum glazing systems are anodised to enhance performance and PVC is used on the roof finish to diminish the quantities of metals employed overall. The project constitutes a divergence from the standard detailing historically evolved by the practice on behalf of the Client.
