The project brief focused on the restoration and re-use of the ancillary linear stable building and the courtyard which is formed by the placement of this utility buildings relative to the main house. Interventions to the rear of the main house were also carried out to improve the spatial relationship between the original house, courtyard and redeveloped outbuildings. The clients desired social spaces including a cinema room, bar space, pool room and some utility space.
The design approach was to remove the non-load bearing cross walls in the existing stable block to achieve a linear open space. The space is sub-divided into three main spaces by careful placement of large furniture elements crafted of smooth spray painted joinery which deliberately contrast the rough fabric of the existing building. The inserted 'furniture' accommodates storage and a small WC.
The primary spaces engage with the courtyard through two large existing openings, which were retained and treated with plain timber doors. Additional new openings were provided and are treated with frameless glazing in recognition of their period.
