Killarney Community College
Killarney Community School is set in a mature landscape in close proximity to St Mary’s Cathedral in Killarney town centre. The Client’s brief was to provide a number of additional resource classrooms and common areas to the existing school. Both the project budget and spatial requirements were limited by strict DoE funding and guidelines.
The intention for the new extension is to read as a contiguous addition to the existing school, echoing the scale and forms of the original mono-pitched forms and courtyards. The expression of the new structure is one of robustness. A tectonic sensibility informs the classroom design and creates a legible example of components, technology and assembly.
Client: Killarney Community College
Sector: Education
Location: Killarney, Co. Kerry, Ireland
Status: Completed 2016
Size: 200m²
Consideration was given to providing ‘essential qualities’ to the classrooms and common rooms, the scale and placement of the windows provide optimised daylight and cross ventilation. Views to the landscape setting, mature trees and sports facilities ground the new extension within the site and bring a sense of belonging to the larger school community.
A mix of smooth and textured blockwork is employed throughout with exposed concrete beams and expressed mass timber roof structures. The use of self-finished, low maintenance materials are prioritised to create durability and robustness, whilst contributing to a healthy indoor environment. The circulation within the building is arranged as a generous centralised space allowing for student interaction and chance encounter.
